ECU Bench Mode
Bench mode is used when an ECU can't be read or written through the OBD port. The control unit is removed from the car and connected directly on the bench, giving full, low-level access to its memory.
It's the method of choice for locked or protected ECUs — and for safely recovering a unit when needed. Always carried out from a verified backup on a stable power supply.
Bench work is a workshop service. Book an appointment and bring your car in — we handle the removal, reading, tuning and refitting in-house.
Full access when OBD can't reach
Modern ECUs are often locked or protected against OBD writing. Bench mode connects to the unit directly, giving the low-level access needed to read and write safely.
Locked & Protected ECUs
Access control units that block reading or writing over OBD.
Full Memory Read
Complete, low-level access to the ECU's flash and data for a proper read.
Recovery
Safely recover a unit when an OBD process can't be completed.
Stable Power
Done on a controlled, monitored power supply to keep the ECU safe.
Verified Backup
The original is fully read and stored before any change is made.
Checksum Correction
Checksums recalculated and the file verified before it's written back.
Removed, read, refitted
A careful workshop process — the ECU only leaves the car for as long as the read and write take.
- 01Make an appointmentBring the car in — we confirm bench mode is the right method.
- 02Remove & connect the ECUThe unit is opened up and wired to the tool on the bench.
- 03Read, back up & tuneFull memory is read and saved, then the file is optimized.
- 04Write, verify & refitChecksums corrected, the file written back and the ECU refitted and tested.
Whether bench mode is required depends on the ECU type and protection. Many vehicles can still be tuned via OBD; some protected units need bench or boot mode. We confirm the right method for your car before any work.
