Completely submerged, filled with water and mud, and declared a total loss – this BMW 520d G31 is getting a second chance. At ABG Performance, the vehicle is being completely dismantled, cleaned, electronically restored and rebuilt step by step.

What happens when a modern BMW doesn’t just suffer minor water damage, but is completely submerged in flood water?

That is exactly the challenge with our latest project: a BMW 520d Touring G31 that suffered severe flood damage. Water and mud entered virtually every area of the vehicle, from the underbody and interior to numerous mechanical and electronic components.

From an economic point of view: a total loss.

For us: an ambitious restoration project.

Complete disassembly instead of simply drying the car

With flood damage of this scale, simply drying the interior, clearing fault codes and installing a new battery is nowhere near enough.

The G31 is therefore being completely stripped and systematically rebuilt at ABG Performance. Seats, carpets, interior trim, electronic modules and numerous other components have been removed to gain access to all affected areas.

The photo gives a good impression of the extent of the work: almost the entire interior has been removed, exposing the body shell, wiring, control modules and other components.

Mud and moisture can remain hidden inside connectors, wiring harnesses, cavities and electronic components. These hidden problems are what make restoring a modern flood-damaged vehicle particularly challenging.

Fuel system – complete cleaning

The entire fuel system requires special attention.

The fuel tank, fuel lines and affected components are inspected, cleaned and flushed. The fuel filter is replaced, and the system is only put back into operation once we are confident that no water, mud or contamination remains.

This is especially important on a modern common-rail diesel system, where even small amounts of contamination can cause expensive damage.

Air intake and air systems

The vehicle’s air and intake systems are also thoroughly inspected and restored.

Any water, dirt or mud remaining inside the intake system must be removed before the engine is operated again. Affected components are opened, inspected, cleaned or replaced where necessary.

The same principle applies throughout the vehicle: clean, inspect, test – and replace when required.

Electronics – one of the biggest challenges

A modern BMW G31 contains a large number of interconnected electronic control units.

After complete submersion, replacing one or two modules is not enough. Every relevant control unit, connector and communication line has to be inspected individually.

Damaged modules are replaced where necessary and then programmed, coded and adapted to the vehicle.

The work on this project includes the engine control unit, instrument cluster, airbag control unit, transmission/selector electronics and various body and comfort modules.

Airbag control unit and crash data

The airbag control unit is also part of the restoration process.

Stored crash/event data is professionally handled and the restraint system is subsequently diagnosed. The goal is not simply to remove an airbag warning from the dashboard. All safety-related components must be checked, and any damaged components must be replaced so that the system operates correctly.

Instrument cluster and ECU programming

Replacement electronics in a modern BMW cannot simply be plugged in and expected to work.

The instrument cluster and engine control unit are programmed and correctly matched to the vehicle. Coding, vehicle configuration and communication between the individual modules all need to work correctly once the vehicle is reassembled.

This part of the project demonstrates just how important software and programming have become in modern vehicle repair.

AdBlue and emissions systems

The AdBlue/SCR and emissions systems are also inspected as part of the project and configured according to the vehicle’s intended use.

Where software modifications to emissions-related systems are involved, they must only be carried out where legally permitted. Disabling emissions-control systems can affect the vehicle’s road legality and approval.

From total loss back to a functioning BMW

The objective is not simply to make the engine start again.

Our goal is to fully and reliably rebuild this BMW 520d G31.

That means restoring the mechanical systems, fuel system, air systems, electronics, control units, programming and ultimately the complete interior.

Once everything has been reassembled, the vehicle will undergo extensive diagnostic, functional and safety checks.

What began as a completely submerged total-loss vehicle will gradually become a functioning BMW again.

To be continued…

This project is still in progress.

We will continue documenting the rebuild and show more of the individual stages – from electronics and control-unit programming to the first successful start, testing and the completed vehicle.
